Once a lively and dynamic town, the abandoned village of Kayaköy in Fethiye, Türkiye, is now known among locals as the "Ghost Village," echoing with stories of its poignant and layered past.
The idea of transforming Kayaköy into an “open-air museum” challenges the traditional model of cultural tourism, which often involves following a rigid itinerary to check off a few popular attractions. This design proposal rejects the conventional notions of “recommended routes” or “must-see spots.” Instead, it champions a slower, more immersive form of sightseeing that encourages you to linger and soak in the essence of a location, a “field”.
Instead of concentrating on landmarks of “higher historic/architectural value”, the project introduces a series of modest interventions discreetly placed within the hundreds of village houses and the natural landscape. These spaces, designed for a small group of people at a time, foster intimate engagement rather than accommodating large groups. It encourages visitors to explore the village independently, creating their own personal and open-ended interpretations of the ruins.
This proposal invites you to spend one day like the ancient Greeks once did. At 9:12 am, bathe in the morning sun inside a traditional Greek house. At 2:58 pm, wander in meadow fields that once served as fertile farmland. And at 5:06 pm, ascend the slope to honor the sunset, just as they did with daily reverence. Pause for a moment—whether standing, sitting, or lying still—to feel the warmth of the same sun that touched 19th-century villagers. Sense the passage of time as a dynamic force flowing through the stillness of the ancient ruins.
At its heart, this is a museum of Time. The design offers a unique exploration through three temporal dimensions: the rhythm of a single day, the cycles of the seasons, and the passage of centuries. By calling out the changed and the unchanged, the design wishes to create an immersive experience with minimal interference and to foster a silent conversation with the enduring yet transient flow of history that is profound yet personal.
Where time lingers, among the ruins, in the field, beneath the sun.
