Xuanhua is an industrial city with a century-old industrial history where the ceramic factory was built in 1942. During China's industrial development, the ceramic factory played a significant role in driving the local economy and became a historical memory for a generation. But after the relocation of the factory, ceramics gradually withdrew from people's vision, and the factory was also abandoned and lacking vitality.
The industrial atmosphere and desolate environment inspired the discussion on how to preserve the industrial "heritage" left on the site and revitalise the site. In the end, the original ceramic factory was transformed into a cultural centre. In terms of design techniques, the design tries to bring in the inner world of the user, connecting human emotions with the space and building a place for people to relax and relieve stress at the edge of the city.
Therefore, the design borrowed the scene storyboard technique in film production to try to find the most intuitive feeling that the site brings to people. At the same time, the addition of new functions such as exhibitions, reading, ceramic workshops, etc., can attract more local residents. The original parameters of the building and industrial elements like tubes, chimneys and bricks are preserved. Here, people can read, do ceramic handicrafts, watch exhibitions, etc. It is a place for leisure for surrounding residents and a place for office workers to relax on non-working days.
