Bezalel Interior Design, Taiwan
Po-Kai Yang entered the world of interior design through the encouragement of a church mentor, finding in it a career defined by creativity, variety, and a constant drive to improve. Today, he approaches every project with a deep commitment to ethical design, blending environmental responsibility with integrity and collaboration.
1 | Congratulations on your achievement! What inspired you to submit this project for the NY Architectural Design Awards?
This project was commissioned by a close friend, who is a graphic designer with a keen and sophisticated sense of aesthetics. During the initial design phase, he presented numerous creative ideas for his new residence. Following several discussions and the resolution of various technical challenges, we successfully integrated his vision into a cohesive design. The final outcome was met with his genuine delight, which motivated us to submit this project as a reflection of our dedicated efforts.
2 | What is the defining concept or vision behind your award-winning project?
A New Chapter in Life The journey of a young couple—a designer and a flight attendant—has reached an exciting milestone as they prepare to welcome a new addition to their family and transition into their newly acquired home. Their objective is to develop an environment that harmonizes comfort with aesthetic appeal while effectively addressing the needs of individuals across various age groups.
3 | Could you briefly share your journey into architecture and what inspired you to pursue this field?
In selecting my university major, I received encouragement from my church pastor to pursue a degree in interior design. Following my graduation, I became a member of the interior design firm where I am currently employed. I find fulfillment in the creativity of the field, the opportunities for continuous learning, and the ability to engage with a diverse range of spaces, ensuring that my work remains stimulating and varied.
4 | How would you describe the mission or goals of your company or studio?
We strive to create something beautiful by adhering to principles of integrity, responsibility, and teamwork. Our commitment is to provide thoughtful and dedicated service to every client.
5 | Were there any unexpected challenges during the design or construction phases? How did they shape the final result?
The client expressed a preference for a minimalist design style incorporating curved elements, which posed several technical challenges. These challenges included the modification of beams, the installation of concealed air conditioning systems, and the design of arched ceilings. Furthermore, due to the client's considerable height, it was imperative to ensure sufficient headroom to avoid a cramped atmosphere within the space. Addressing these design specifications required extensive communication and collaboration with contractors to achieve the desired outcome effectively.
6 | How does your design process usually unfold-from ideation to completion?
The client, who is a graphic designer, placed a higher emphasis on aesthetics than on functionality. Prior to engaging our services, he had already assembled an extensive collection of styles and references. Our objective became the curation of public spaces, integrating his preferred elements to accurately reflect his personal style with precision.
7 | If you had to describe the journey of this project in three words, what would they be?
Beautiful, dream, and fulfilled.
8 | What feedback have you received about your work that has been particularly meaningful or surprising?
Every interaction and experience with our clients is regarded as a valued memory.
9 | What does receiving this recognition mean for you, your team, or your studio?
This award signifies that the aspirations of our clients can indeed be realized. With the unwavering support of our dedicated team, we are positioned to collectively navigate and overcome each challenge that arises.
10 | How do you see this award influencing your future projects or career?
This recognition affirms our professionalism and commitment, enhancing our confidence as we advance into the future.
11 | What's a project or idea you've been dreaming of bringing to life, and why does it inspire you?
Designing a new church for my congregation! The old church witnessed my growth, my early career, and even my wedding. I hope the new church will continue to support the next generation through all their major life stages.
12 | Where do you see the architectural field heading in the next decade, and how do you envision contributing to its evolution?
In our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, we are actively transforming our construction practices and material selections. Our objective is to achieve aesthetic excellence while simultaneously demonstrating care for the planet we inhabit.
13 | How do you see your designs contributing to the future of sustainable architecture?
By minimizing waste and pollution.
14 | If you could design anything, with no limits on budget or imagination, what would it be?
I’d love to design a treehouse in outer space—a vibrant oasis amid the vast emptiness. It would bask in sunlight 24 hours a day, experience eternal spring, and offer peace, serenity, and the most magnificent view of all: Earth.
