This is a public market design proposal that aims to address the growing problem of food deserts in London. According to the London E-food Desert Index (data source: Consumer Data Research Centre and University of Leeds), this project identified several areas with serious food desert conditions. The final site is located in the Clapton area in northeast London, on a site close to the River Lea and Millfields Park. It is important to note that the project is not only intended to solve the food desert problem in this area, but also to propose a public market model that could be replicated elsewhere.
Unlike traditional markets where stalls often have similar layouts and rental systems, this project proposes a multi-class market structure. The stalls are divided into three types: central core stalls (leased yearly), regular stalls arranged in rows (leased monthly), and flexible small stall areas (leased daily). The goal is to lower the entry barrier for vendors and increase the diversity of the market.
The design aims not only to activate the public market and improve the local food desert situation, but also to revive the traditional role of markets as centers of urban public life and to strengthen community connections.
